I was born March 8, 1958 the youngest and most attractive of five kids. 9 months later our family of seven moved from the snows of Philadelphia, PA, to the sun-baked desert of Paradise Valley, AZ. Two years after that my dad started to chase me around every day begging that I do something funny. So began my career as a cartoon model and on February 29, 1960 “The Family Circus” debuted in 19 newspapers (today it totals over 1500). After high school my dotted-line headed west where I studied theater and received a BFA in drama from the University of Southern California. In 1981, in an attempt to have a freer schedule for auditions, etc., I returned to my cartoon work with my dad (he said it would help further my career and he was right, because I’ve never been further from my career). I started out just answering mail...
but now my duties consist of many, many more varied tasks: writing gags, penciling, inking, coloring, compiling books and calendars, sharpening pencils, sweeping the studio and wondering what my dad does. In 1988, I married Melinda, moved to Laguna Hills, and together we created 3 cartoon models of our own (Spencer, Matilda and Olivia). Now I chase them around every day begging them to do something funny. So “The Family Circus” keeps going around in circles.
