I love being an editorial cartoonist even though my editor has cracked down on me. She says I now have to be in by noon. My day is spent procrastinating until around 3pm. Then panic that I won’t be able to come up with an idea sets in. That motivates me. I keep coming up with ideas that seem to get better the more I panic and the closer it gets to my 5:30 idea deadline. When I have an idea approved, it’s usually really late in the day, so I don’t have much time to draw it, so I don’t pencil in anything first. I just ink the cartoon and use a lot of whiteout. By the end of the day, the side of my face is usually white from the whiteout all over my fingers. I’ve been doing this job for 25 years and I still love it.
